In the hills above the Helgådalen valley, the Malså copper mines were the largest mining operation in Verdal. Experimental ore extraction ran here from 1865, and by the early 1880s a smelting hut at Skjækerfossen downstream was processing the output. Operations shut down in 1892 when the ore proved unprofitable.

What remains are open mine shafts, spoil heaps, and traces of the infrastructure that once connected the mines to the valley below. A trail from Vuku leads up to the mine site and continues on to Mokk farm on the Steinkjer side, making a scenic through-hike along the border of Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park.
