The three massive electricity pylons crossing Karmsundet near the Hydro aluminium plant are 143 metres tall, making them the tallest in Norway. They carry power lines from the mainland to Karmøy, feeding the aluminium smelter at Håvik which needs enormous amounts of electricity to operate.
The pylons are visible from the Karmsund Bridge and from much of the surrounding area. They are hard to miss and easy to wonder about.
If you wonder why there is a word for them in Norwegian: kraftmaster, literally "power masts". These are among the most impressive in the country.
