Jutulholet

On the island of Skarsøya, north of Aure centre, a large mountain cave called Jutulholet cuts deep into the rock. The name translates to "the giant's hole", and local legends say a jutul, a massive troll-like creature from Norse folklore, once lived inside. The cave is genuinely impressive in size, deep enough and dark enough that a torch is recommended.

What makes Jutulholet unusual is its layered history. During World War II, the German military built a coastal battery on the heights above the cave, using the natural terrain for defence. Remains of the fortification are still visible along the marked path from Finnset to the cave. So a single hike combines folklore, geology and wartime history in one short walk.

In recent years the cave has found a third life as a concert venue, its natural acoustics and atmospheric setting drawing small performances into the rock chamber. The hike from Finnset is marked and relatively easy, making it accessible for families. The combination of a genuine troll cave, WWII ruins and the quiet beauty of Skarsøya island makes this one of Nordmøre's better hidden gems.
