Haugastøl is where road and railway part company. From Haugastøl, the Bergen Railway swings north through Finse and over the high mountains, while RV7 heads south across the Hardangervidda plateau. If you're driving, you won't see the train again until Voss.
The station opened in 1908 and is now heritage listed. Architect Paul Armin Due designed it in a mix of National Romantic and Jugendstil styles. During summer, the station is staffed to handle the stream of cyclists beginning the Rallarvegen, the old construction road that follows the railway 82 kilometres to Flåm. Around 25,000 people cycle it each year.
The tourist centre nearby rents bikes and offers accommodation for those starting early.
