There is a train inside Gaustatoppen. It was built by the US Army in the 1950s during the Cold War to provide year-round access to a NATO antenna station on the summit. The installation was operated jointly by the American and Norwegian military. The whole thing was classified and kept secret until the early 2000s.

The system has two stages. First, a tram drives horizontally about 900 metres into the mountain. Then you switch to a funicular that climbs steeply to just below the summit. The ride takes about 20 minutes total. From the top station, you walk a short distance to the viewing platform and cabin.

It opened to the public in 2010. Because it was designed as a military transport and not a public attraction, it does not meet modern accessibility standards. The access to the funicular is via a steep staircase, the tram car is very low, and the doors are narrow. If you have mobility issues, check the operator's website or contact them directly before booking.

The train runs most of the year but not every day. Check their website for the current schedule. It is a popular way to visit Gaustatoppen for people who do not want to hike, and it lets you see the summit in about two hours round trip instead of six.
