Nordlandsporten, the Gateway to Northern Norway, marks the county border between Trøndelag and Nordland with an arch across the E6 that symbolizes the northern lights. It is one of the most photographed spots along the highway. The gateway began as a simple information stop built by Grane municipality in the 1990s. In 2013, brothers Lars Jonas and Jan-Michael Westerfjell purchased the site and transformed it into a year-round destination with a café, a souvenir shop specializing in Sami handicraft and handmade knives, and modern rest facilities. The Norwegian Public Roads Administration has classified it as a national main rest stop. The arch marks a real transition. Nordland is Norway's longest county, stretching from here all the way to the Lofoten archipelago. This is where the midnight sun and northern lights begin to define daily life, and where Southern Sami reindeer herding country meets the dramatic coastline of Helgeland.
