Fossestien sits along the Gaularfjellet scenic route, north of the Sognefjord. This is Norway's waterfall trail. The full route stretches 21 kilometres and passes 14 waterfalls and seven lakes. There are two main sections here.

The longer 14-kilometre stretch runs between Eldalen and Torsnesstølen alongside the Gaula river. The shorter 7-kilometre section starts from Vik and follows the Råheimdalselva river. This is a different Vik than the famous one at the Sognefjord.

The trail isn't practical as a circular route. Walking back would take too long. Fortunately, Hov Hyttegrend campsite runs a shuttle service during summer. They drop you at the starting point and you hike back to them.

You have two route options. The upper route starts at Torsnesstølen or Langestølen. It's above the tree line with fewer waterfalls. The lower route begins at Eldalen or Lyngstad. This one runs through forest and has more waterfalls per kilometre. The trail follows red F markers.

From Lyngstad, you'll first encounter Botnafossen waterfall after a gentle climb. Be careful near the edges. The path continues through forest to Gjermundstadfossen at the end of a small lake.
