Fjærland

90 minutes
Fjærland, also known as Mundal, is a village at the end of the Fjærlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord. Until 1986 there was no road here. You could only arrive by ferry. The road to Sogndal finally opened in 1990, which changed the village but did not transform it entirely.

Fjærland is a designated book town, meaning second-hand bookshops are scattered throughout the village in old boathouses, stables, and other buildings. It is a charming concept, though the selection varies.

The Norwegian Glacier Museum sits between the village and the glacier viewpoints. It has interactive exhibitions and a panoramic film about Jostedalsbreen and its outlet glaciers. If you want to understand how glaciers work before seeing them up close, start here.

Next to the church is Hotel Mundal, a historic hotel whose interior was unchanged since 1900. Former US Vice President Walter Mondale, whose ancestors came from Mundal, visited here. A renovation started a few years ago, but costs spiralled out of control and the hotel was left as a building site. The owner says it will reopen one day. None of the locals believe it.

The old ferry terminal is in the village. The glacier arm Bøyabreen is visible from the road north of the village.
