Farsund is a small coastal town on the Lista peninsula with a history stretching back to the 16th century. It was formally established as a trading post in 1795 and grew into one of the largest shipping towns in Norway relative to its population. In the early 1800s, the waters off Lista were frequented by privateers, and the town still celebrates this history with an annual pirate festival. During the Second World War, the Germans built over 400 bunkers in the area as part of the Atlantic Wall. Today Farsund is a quiet white-painted town and the gateway to the Lista peninsula's beaches, birdlife, and WWII fortifications.
