Eldrehaugen is the highest point on Rv52, at 1137 metres. The parking area on the south shore of Eldrevatn sits at the boundary between Vestland and Buskerud, between Lærdal and Hemsedal municipalities. An old stone cairn here marks the border of Bergens Stift and Nordre Bergenhus Amt - the names used before 1919, when the amt became Sogn og Fjordane.
But the site is much older than that. Eldrehaugen was a reindeer slaughtering site, and archaeologists have found traces of Stone Age hunting culture here. An information board explains this history. The restored Kongevegen - the old King's Road from Hemsedal - ends here.
