Drammen: Norway's River City Reborn

60 minutes
Drammen sits at the confluence of the Drammenselva river and Drammensfjord, a strategic position that shaped its identity as a timber trading hub. Founded officially in 1811 through the merger of two port towns, Drammen became one of Eastern Norway's most important maritime centers. For centuries, timber merchants floated logs from inland forests downriver to the coast, where they were shipped across Europe. This wealth spawned over a dozen paper and pulp mills that lined the banks, creating the industrial landscape that defined the city for generations.

Today, Drammen has undergone a dramatic transformation into Elvebyen (River City). The former industrial waterfront is now a scenic promenade with art installations, cafes, and green spaces stretching from the city center toward the fjord. The river that once defined commerce now defines leisure and cultural life. Modern Drammen is a multicultural city with excellent shopping, museums, and restaurants, yet it hasn't abandoned its timber heritage; carefully preserved old timber warehouses tell the story of its prosperous past. Only 44 km southwest of Oslo, Drammen offers an accessible alternative to the capital with genuine character and a palpable sense of reinvention.
