Christiansfjeld fortress was built in 1673 under King Christian V to guard the border crossing into Sweden along the Glomma valley. The star-shaped earthwork fort became the nucleus around which Elverum grew. Soldiers, traders, and craftsmen settled nearby, and by the early 1700s a small market town had formed.
The fortifications saw no major siege, but their presence made Elverum a garrison town for three centuries. Parts of the old earthworks are still visible, and the fortress grounds are now a public park in the centre of town.
