Bygdin is a vast alpine lake stretching 32 kilometres across the southern reaches of Jotunheimen, sitting at 1,060 metres above sea level. The water is surrounded by some of Norway's most dramatic mountain terrain; on a clear day from the shore you can count more than 10 peaks over 2,000 metres towering above the horizon.
The lake's character is defined by the historic M/B Bitihorn, a boat that has crossed these waters since 1912. This passenger vessel connects Bygdin Fjellhotel on the eastern shore with Eidsbugarden to the west, stopping at Torfinnsbu mountain cabin along the way. At nearly 115 years of service, the Bitihorn is one of Northern Europe's highest-altitude boat routes and remains central to the hiking experience here. The boat's lounge interior seats roughly 70 passengers, and its daily summer runs (late June to mid-September) allow hikers to save legs for mountain traverse instead of shoreline trudging.
