Borlaug

🚦 Crossroad Valley Sognefjord

Borlaug

Borlaug is a small hamlet at the top of the Lærdal valley, where the road from Hemsedal meets the E16. This has been a crossroads for travellers between east and west for centuries. The King's Road over Filefjell has always passed through here, and in the 1840s the route over Hemsedalsfjellet was added - making Borlaug even more important as a hub.

Just off the road is Borlo Farmyard, a privately owned open-air museum with around 20 historic buildings. Each has information boards explaining its use. The King's Road runs right through this old cultural landscape. There's even a cinema in what used to be the muck cellar, and an outdoor amphitheatre with a stage. You're welcome to walk around.

If you're looking for accommodation, there's a youth hostel here - HI Borlaug Vandrarheim - which makes a good base for hiking the King's Road or fishing in the Lærdal river.
