This is where the old Valdres railway tracks end – literally. The line from Dokka still has rails as far as Bjørgo, but they haven't carried regular traffic since 1988.
Bjørgo station opened in 1905, a year before the railway reached Fagernes. The station building still stands and is listed for preservation. Until 2022, some old railway carriages were displayed here, but they've since been moved to Dokka.
The tracks between Bjørgo and Leira were torn up in 2002, despite protests. Today, the old railway bed has become the Valdresbanevegen, a paved walking and cycling path running 17 kilometres north to Fagernes through Aurdal and Leira. It's flat, traffic-free, and passes several places to stop for coffee along the way.
