Bergsetbreen is one of the easiest glacier arms to reach in the Jostedalsbreen system, which is exactly why it tends to get overlooked. It sits in the valley above Nigardsbreen, and most visitors drive right past the turnoff on their way to the more famous neighbour.
The walk from the car park takes about 20 minutes. That's it. You follow a short trail through birch forest and emerge at a viewpoint looking straight up at the glacier tongue hanging off the mountainside. It's steep, broken, and pale blue where the ice is compressed. The whole thing looks like it could slide off at any moment, and historically, it has. In the 18th century, Bergsetbreen advanced so far it destroyed farms in the valley below. The Little Ice Age pushed glaciers across Norway to their maximum extent, burying pastures and houses that had been there for centuries.
Today the glacier is retreating fast. The tongue is thinner and shorter every year. Keep your distance from the base. Rocks and ice fall regularly, and the terrain below the glacier is loose moraine. This is a good stop if you want to see a glacier without committing to a full day hike, but respect the warnings. Short walk does not mean safe walk.
