Ågerøya is a small island sitting in the middle of the Blindleia strait near Lillesand. Settlement began around 1800, and by the late 1800s the island was home to nearly 400 people, a remarkable number for its size. It had its own school, library, navigation school, shoemaker and several shipping companies whose vessels sailed to Denmark and beyond.
A post office operated on the island from 1890 to 1978. When the shipping era faded, fishing became the main livelihood from the 1930s through the 1980s. Today around 40 people live here year-round. There are no cars on the island; access is by boat only. In summer the population multiplies as holiday visitors fill the old wooden houses.
