Unstad Beach

60 minutes
Unstad on the outer coast of Vestvågøy is the main surfing spot in Lofoten and one of the northernmost surf beaches in the world. It faces the open Norwegian Sea and picks up Atlantic swells reliably.

The beach has become famous for Arctic surfing, particularly in winter when surfers ride waves under the northern lights. It sounds extreme, but thick wetsuits and the relatively mild winter temperatures of coastal Lofoten make it manageable. Several surf schools and rental shops operate here during the season.

The small farming and fishing settlement around Unstad has not changed much despite the surfing boom. The road in from the E10 is narrow and winding. Parking is limited and the municipality has cracked down on wild camping in the area.
