Tuddal is a small mountain village on the scenic road between Rjukan and Notodden. If the weather is good, this route is far more rewarding than the main road. It passes right at the base of Gaustatoppen and then descends with hairpin turns down to the Notodden side. Be aware that this road closes in winter, usually from November to April.
Tuddal Høyfjellshotell is the reason some people stop here. It is a historic mountain hotel from 1895, originally built as a sanatorium. Today it is known for its traditional atmosphere and gourmet food. It is a bit of a hidden gem, the kind of place that Norwegians know about but tourists rarely find.
The village itself is quiet. A few houses, a church, and the mountains all around. It is a good base for hiking in the area if you want to avoid the busier options closer to Rjukan.
