Tromsdalstinden is Tromsø's home mountain and the closest peak over 1,000 metres to the city centre. Locals just call it Tinden, the Peak. Its Sámi name is Sálašoaivi. The summit is at 1,238 metres.

The hike takes 7 to 8 hours round trip. There are two routes: the summer route is shorter but steeper with more scree, the winter route is longer with a gentler slope. The trail starts in Tromsdalen. Expect about 3.5 hours to the top if you are in decent shape.

On a clear day, the view from the summit covers the Lyngen Alps to the east, the ocean to the west, and Tromsø far below. In August, an extreme mountain run race goes to the summit.

This is a serious day hike. Good shoes, plenty of water, and proper clothing are essential. The weather can change quickly at this altitude. Do not attempt it in poor visibility or if you are not fit enough for a full day in the mountains.

Good to Know

Weather Tip

Do not go in poor visibility or bad weather. Conditions change fast above 1,000 metres.

Safety Note

This is a full-day mountain hike with significant elevation. The upper section has loose scree and exposed terrain. Turn back if weather deteriorates.
