Trengereid marks the junction where the Hardanger road splits from the E16 to Bergen. If you're heading to Bergen, you're now in the city municipality - though it doesn't feel like it yet. The city centre is still about 20 kilometres away through tunnels and along the fjord.
Trengereid grew up around a textile factory. In 1895, Johan Jebsen established a ribbon and lace factory here with its own power plant. The power station still operates today, now modernised and run by BKK.
There used to be lime mining at nearby Risnes as well.
Down by the water you'll see Trengereid Station on the Bergen Line. It opened in 1883 when the railway from Bergen to Voss was completed. Local trains still stop here, though express services pass through without stopping.
