Fossenbratte

60 minutes
Fossenbratte means "steep waterfall" and that's exactly what it is. The river Eikedalselva drops 79 metres in a single cascade at the entrance to the Eikedalen valley. It's sometimes called Brudesløret - the Bridal Veil.

This waterfall has two memorials with very different stories. At the top, you'll find a cannon and a plaque commemorating Norwegian soldiers who fought here in April 1940. They positioned themselves at the cliff edge to try to stop German forces advancing toward Bergen. Without reinforcements, they were eventually overwhelmed.

At the bottom there's a memorial to a French couple - René and Ginette Laigle, aged 28 and 24. They were on their honeymoon when their car drove off the road at the top of the waterfall on 13 July 1951. Both lost their lives. Some people think this tragedy gave the waterfall its Bridal Veil nickname, but that name was already in use from the early 1900s tourism era.

You can park right after the tunnel and walk down to the base of the falls in about five minutes. Or take the old road up to the war memorial at the top - that adds maybe 30 minutes. You will get wet from the spray at the base.
