Stanghelle is a small village of around 770 people where the railway crosses the narrow Hellestraumen strait. The station opened in 1883 with the original Vossebanen line. Express trains pass through without stopping, but local Bergen Commuter Rail services call here about twelve times daily in each direction.
From the train you can look across to Osterøy, one of Northern Europe's largest inland islands at 328 square kilometres. The island is accessible via the Osterøy Bridge further south, reached by exiting the E16 just after Trengereid.
