Sogndal

60 minutes
Sogndal is the main town in the inner Sognefjord region, with about 8,000 people. It functions as the commercial and administrative centre for the surrounding municipalities. There are no real tourist attractions in town, but if you need shops, a pharmacy, or a supermarket, this is where you go.

Sogndal is best known for two things: fruit and football. This region, together with the Hardangerfjord, is one of Norway's main fruit-producing areas. During season, small stalls selling cherries, plums, and apples line the roads. The Lerum juice and jam factory, founded in 1907 and still family-owned, is based here. You will find their products in every Norwegian supermarket.

The football culture is outsized for a town this small. Sogndal IL plays at Fosshaugane Campus, a stadium with 5,600 seats, enough for most of the town. The Norwegian league runs through summer, so if you are here between April and November and want to see a match, check the schedule. It is a proper local experience.

Sogndal is an important crossroads. From here you can head north to the Lustrafjord and Sognefjellet, west to Balestrand and Fjærland, or south to Kaupanger and the Fodnes ferry. There is also a small airport with flights to Bergen and Oslo, though it is not the cheapest way to get here.
