SKREI tells the story of the Arctic cod that shaped Lofoten and Norway for a thousand years. Every winter, millions of skrei migrate south from the Barents Sea to spawn along the Norwegian coast, and the fisheries they created built the economy, culture, and identity of coastal Norway.
The centrepiece is Otolitten, a new 5,000 square metre building at Storvågan near Kabelvåg. The exhibition goes beyond the fishing itself, giving space to the families and communities on shore, and the often-overlooked role of women in the industry. SKREI also includes the Lofoten Aquarium with its cold-water coral displays and seal and otter feeding sessions, the Lofoten Museum covering local history, and the Espolin Gallery showcasing the dark, dramatic art of Kaare Espolin Johnson.
The complex opened in its new form on June 30, 2026.
