Skarnes

30 minutes
Skarnes is the administrative centre of Sør-Odal municipality, a quiet village of around 2,700 people on the banks of the Glomma. The railway arrived in 1862, and the village grew slowly around the station. There is not a great deal to do here, and the locals will be the first to tell you so.

That honest lack of excitement is exactly what made Skarnes the perfect setting for the Netflix series Post Mortem: No One Dies in Skarnes, which premiered in 2021. Directed by Harald Zwart, the show follows the Hallangen family, who run the local funeral home. Business is terrible, because nobody in Skarnes seems to die. Then their daughter Live is found dead in a field, only to wake up on the autopsy table with a sudden craving for blood. It is a vampire comedy set in a place so sleepy that even the undead struggle to stay entertained. The series was filmed on location and put Skarnes on the international map for the first time, though probably not in the way the local tourism board had imagined.
