The Sherpa Stairs are a stone staircase of roughly 1,200 steps climbing from Tromsdalen to the mountain plateau near the top station of Fjellheisen at 410 metres. They were built by Nepalese Sherpas between 2016 and 2019 to protect the terrain from erosion caused by the thousands of hikers using the old trail.

The stairs are steep and relentless, but the stone work is excellent and there are resting areas with benches and viewpoints along the way. Most reasonably fit people can do it in 45 minutes to an hour up. The views over Tromsø and the surrounding mountains improve with every hundred steps.

A popular combination is to hike up the Sherpa stairs and take the cable car down, or vice versa. The trailhead is near the lower station of Fjellheisen in Tromsdalen.

This is one of the most popular hikes in Tromsø for both locals and visitors. It can be busy on summer evenings and weekends.
