Ryssdalshornet is an iconic pyramid-shaped peak that rises to 1,160 metres directly from the shores of Breimsvatnet near Sandane in Gloppen. Its dramatic silhouette makes it one of the most photographed mountains in Nordfjord and one of the most popular hikes in the area.
The waymarked route starts with a steep tractor road up to the summer pasture farm Rysddalstøylen, then heads northeast up a steep hillside. The trail includes sections with steel steps and a rope to assist on one steep pitch. Some light scrambling is required, making this a challenging but rewarding hike with a round trip of about four hours.
From the summit, the views extend across Gloppen to Sandane and Breim, with the lake below and the surrounding peaks creating a classic Nordfjord panorama. The best season is June through October.
