Rundemellen is the most recognisable landmark in central Valdres. At 1,345 metres, it's the highest of the four rounded peaks collectively known as "Mellene" - the name refers to their melon-like shape.
You can see it from almost anywhere in the region. The hike starts from Turrsjøen, reached via a toll road from Melbybråten off Road 51. The toll is 50 kroner. From the car park, two trails lead around the mountain - one on the south side, one on the north - and they meet near the summit. You can combine them into a circuit.
The path is marked with cairns in the upper section. On the summit plateau you'll find many cairns, but the highest point is obvious - it's the biggest one. There's a summit book to sign. On a clear day, you can see Gaustatoppen in Telemark, the Hemsedal mountains, Filefjell, Bitihorn, Bygdin, and the peaks of Jotunheimen including Besshøe and Glittertind.
Some say you can see almost to Oslo. The hike is about 2.5 km one way with 340 metres of elevation gain. Count 1 to 1.5 hours up. Suitable for children from around 4-5 years if they're used to walking.
