Romsdalseggen is a ridge hike above Åndalsnes that Lonely Planet once named one of the world's most scenic. It is a one-way, point-to-point hike — about 10 kilometres long with 970 metres of elevation gain. Most people take between 5 and 8 hours.

The hike starts in Vengedalen, about a 20-minute bus ride from the town centre. A dedicated shuttle runs from the Norsk Tindesenter during the season, roughly from the end of June to the end of September. The trail ends at Nesaksla, where you can either walk down to Åndalsnes or take the gondola.

Be aware that this is a demanding hike. The official Norwegian rating is red, meaning challenging. There are exposed sections along the ridge where the path narrows significantly, with steep drops on both sides. Chains are bolted into the rock at the steepest points. The highest point is Mjølvafjellet at 1,222 metres. You do not need climbing equipment, but you should not be afraid of heights, and you need to be in good physical shape. This is not recommended for children. There is an easier alternative route via Høgnosa that avoids some of the most exposed sections, but you will miss some of the best views.

From the ridge, you look straight across at Trollveggen, down into Romsdalen with the Rauma river far below, and on a clear day all the way out to Molde and the ocean. The weather can change quickly up here, so check the forecast and bring proper gear even if the morning looks fine.
