Repvåg

60 minutes
Repvåg, known as Reiffvahki in Northern Sami, is a tiny fishing hamlet on the western shore of the Porsangerfjord, right on the E6 road to Nordkapp. Most drivers blow past it without a second glance, but this was once one of the most important trading posts in inner Finnmark.

The settlement dates back centuries as a hub for the Pomor trade, the barter system between Norwegian fishing communities and Russian merchants who sailed from the White Sea each summer. Fish went east, grain and timber came west. The trade shaped the economy of the entire coast until it was shut down after the Russian Revolution.

Like nearly every settlement in Finnmark, Repvåg was burned to the ground during the German scorched earth retreat of 1944. The small chapel that stands here today was one of the first buildings reconstructed after liberation. The Repvåg Fjordhotell now occupies restored harbourside buildings and serves as a rare overnight option on the long drive between Lakselv and Honningsvåg.

This stretch of the E6 runs along the Porsangerfjord for kilometre after kilometre, with the water on one side and the open plateau on the other. Repvåg is the only sign of life for a long distance in either direction.
