Nesflaten

60 minutes
Nesflaten is a small village at the northern end of Suldalsvatnet, with about 80 houses spread across the hillside. It looks different from other villages in Ryfylke. The flat-roofed houses, the hotel, and the distinctive round administration building - locals call it the "UFO" - were all designed by architect Geir Grung in the 1960s as part of the Røldal-Suldal hydropower development.

This is one of the best-preserved examples of functionalist architecture in Norway. The concrete brutalism seems unexpected in a small West Norwegian village, but it has become part of the landscape.

The Energihotellet was originally built to house workers and guests of the power company. Today it operates as a design hotel with original 1960s furniture and a restaurant focused on local ingredients. The daughter of the original architect, Tai Grung, designed an extension completed in 2015.

From Nesflaten there are good hiking opportunities in the surrounding mountains. The peak Nipe offers views over the lake and village.
