Møysalen National Park

🌲 Nature-reserve Mountain Vesterålen

Møysalen National Park

480 minutes
Very Difficult
Møysalen protects the wildest mountain terrain in Vesterålen. The park, established in 2003, covers 51 square kilometres centred on Møysalen, at 1,262 metres the highest peak on the Vesterålen islands. The mountain rises almost directly from the fjord, creating a dramatic vertical landscape where alpine conditions exist just kilometres from the sea.

The park is small but steep. Deep valleys cut between sharp ridges, and the mountainsides are too steep and rocky for much vegetation. Snow lingers into summer in the shaded couloirs, and the summit offers views across the entire Vesterålen and Lofoten archipelago on clear days.

Despite being on an island, Møysalen feels genuinely remote. There are no marked trails to the summit and no cabins in the park. The standard route from Åknes follows a valley before a steep scramble to the top, and the terrain requires proper mountain experience. For most visitors to Vesterålen, the park is a dramatic backdrop seen from the coast road rather than a destination in itself, but for those who do climb Møysalen, the reward is one of the finest viewpoints in Arctic Norway.
