Lommedalsbanen - Norway's Smallest Railway

90 minutes
Lommedalsbanen is tucked away in Lommedalen, just outside Bærum. This tiny museum railway runs for only one kilometre on a narrow 600-millimetre gauge track. It's quite charming, but you need to plan ahead.

The railway was built by enthusiasts who wanted to preserve Norway's narrow-gauge railway heritage. These small railways were once common across the country for transporting timber and goods through difficult terrain.

Now this is one of the few places you can experience what travel was like in the early 1900s. The trains are usually pulled by authentic steam locomotives, which gives the whole experience a proper historical feel. You'll chug slowly through the forest at walking pace, so don't expect any dramatic scenery.

Here's the catch - Lommedalsbanen only operates on selected weekends throughout the year. They don't run daily services like most tourist attractions.

Check their website before making the trip out here, or you'll find empty tracks and closed gates. In early December they run special Christmas trains to visit Father Christmas, which is popular with families. The journey itself takes about fifteen minutes each way, so it's more about the experience than the destination.
