Lofotr Viking Museum

90 minutes
The Lofotr Viking Museum sits in Borg, deep in the Lofoten islands. This place is built on top of the largest Viking longhouse ever discovered in Norway. Archaeologists found it back in 1983, and it dates to around 500 AD. The museum has reconstructed the massive longhouse based on the original foundations.

You can walk through the same halls where Viking chieftains once held their feasts a thousand years ago. The building is impressive - 83 metres long and built using traditional techniques. What makes this different from other Viking museums is the living history approach.

During summer, they host authentic Viking feasts with period food and entertainment. You sit at long wooden tables, eat with your hands, and drink from horns. It feels quite authentic, though it's obviously staged for tourists. The location is spectacular, surrounded by Lofoten's dramatic peaks and sea.

Unfortunately, it's quite remote - about 45 minutes drive from Svolvær. The museum is seasonal, typically open from May to September. Check their website before making the journey, as opening times vary.
