Kviteseid is a small village that grew up around its harbour on the waterway between lakes Bandak and Kviteseidvatn. For centuries it served as a traffic hub for much of Vest-Telemark, with people and goods moving by boat.
The municipality of Kviteseid includes Morgedal, known as the cradle of modern skiing and the home of Sondre Norheim, who developed the Telemark turn and essentially invented skiing as a sport in the 1860s. Morgedal is where the Olympic flame for the Winter Olympics has been lit on several occasions.
The village itself is quiet and compact. There is a church, a few shops, and a harbour where the canal boats stop. The main industries in the area are forestry, agriculture, and hydroelectric power. If you are travelling the canal route by car, Kviteseid is a natural stop between Bø and Dalen.
