Jektefartsmuseet tells the story of the jekt trade that was the economic lifeline of Northern Norway for centuries. Jekter were large, flat-bottomed cargo sailing vessels, some over 20 metres long, that carried dried fish south to Bergen and brought grain, timber, and supplies back north. From medieval times through the 1800s, this annual voyage was the only reliable connection between the northern coast and the markets of Europe. The skippers who ran these ships were among the most powerful figures in their communities.

The museum's centrepiece is Anna Karoline, the only surviving original Nordlandsjekt. She sits inside the exhibition hall, giving a sense of the scale and craftsmanship of these vessels. Around her, the museum covers the raw coastal culture that produced them: the fish trade, the dangers of the voyage, and the social hierarchy of the jekteskipper families.

Jektefartsmuseet is part of the Bodøsjøen open-air museum area, about two kilometres south of Bodø city centre along the waterfront. The outdoor area includes reconstructed buildings, boathouses, and a shoreline path.
