Horten: Norway's Naval Capital and Viking Heartland

120 minutes
Horten was the home of the Royal Norwegian Navy for over 150 years. The naval base at Karljohansvern, established in 1818, turned this small fjord town into a hub of shipbuilding, engineering, and military innovation. Norway's first technical school was founded here, and the dockyards produced everything from steam frigates to submarines. The navy moved its headquarters to Bergen in the 1960s, but the old base remains beautifully intact: a peninsula of yellow wooden buildings, cobblestone lanes, and waterfront promenades that feel more like a charming village than a former military installation.

The Marinemuseet (Naval Museum) on the base is one of Norway's best military museums, with model ships, artefacts, and exhibits spanning two centuries of naval history. Nearby, the Preus Museum is dedicated to photography and visual art.

But Horten's history goes much deeper than the navy. Just north of town lies Borreparken, the largest collection of monumental Viking burial mounds in Northern Europe, and the Midgard Historisk Senter brings the Viking era to life. A few kilometres south, the artists' village of Åsgårdstrand is where Edvard Munch kept his summer house and painted some of his most famous works. Horten also operates the car ferry across the Oslofjord to Moss, making it a natural crossing point for travellers.
