Holtnesdalen Ravine

Holtnesdalen is a narrow ravine in the Hurum peninsula where steep rock walls shelter a lush deciduous forest of ash and elm. Protected as a nature reserve since 1974, the 26-hectare gorge has been called Norway's most beautiful temperate rainforest. Dead and dying trees left standing create valuable habitat for insects and fungi, making this small valley disproportionately important for biodiversity. A walking trail threads through the ravine floor.
