The mountain towering over Sand is Hellandsnuten. At 740 metres, it is not the highest peak in Suldal - the municipality actually has five of the seven highest mountains in Rogaland - but it offers something special. From the summit, you can see five fjords at once: Sandsfjorden, Hylsfjorden, Saudafjorden, Vindafjorden and Lovrafjorden.
The hike starts from the kindergarten car park at Eide, just outside the centre of Sand. It is about 14 kilometres round trip with 895 metres of climb. Allow six hours without breaks. The route goes via Hellandsstølen and is rated demanding - some sections are steep and the trail marking can be sparse in places.
At the top there is a summit book where you can sign your name. Hellandsnuten is one of six peaks in the local "Nutfant" challenge. Complete all six in a year and you get your name in the newspaper and a prize in the post. The season runs from May to October.
