Godøya looks like one giant piece of rock rising out of the sea. The island sits just west of Ålesund and is reached through an undersea tunnel from neighbouring Giske. Its highest point, Storhornet, reaches 497 metres, which is impressive for a small island. From Ålesund it looks like a steep wall, but seen from the west it has a more gentle cone shape.
At the far end of the island lies Alnes, a small fishing village that was once one of the largest in all of Sunnmøre. The houses sit in tight clusters along the shore, and the village has been designated a national cultural landscape. Alnes lighthouse is covered as a separate point of interest in this app.
For hikers, Godøya is excellent. The trail from Alnes up to Storhornet takes about 1.5 to 2.5 hours one way and passes Alnesvatnet, a small mountain lake with good fishing. From the summit you get a full 360-degree view over the Atlantic, the islands, Ålesund, and the Sunnmøre Alps. Along the way, look for Johan Skytt, a flat rock that sticks out over the edge of the mountainside like a diving board. Not for the faint-hearted.
Be aware that the tunnel to Godøya from Giske can have restricted opening times outside peak hours. Check before you drive.
