Gaularfjellet Mountain Pass Viewpoint

20 minutes
Gaularfjellet is a mountain pass that connects Sunnfjord to Sogn. The road climbs 784 metres above sea level over 114 kilometres. It's part of Norway's official scenic route network.

The viewpoint here is called Utsikten, which simply means "the view" in Norwegian. From this platform you can see down towards Fjærland and the surrounding fjord landscape. On clear days the view stretches quite far across the valleys below.

The road itself winds through typical Norwegian mountain terrain. You'll pass lakes and rocky outcrops on the way up. The landscape changes as you gain altitude, from farmland to more barren mountain plateau. Be aware that this route can be challenging in winter. Snow often lingers here well into May, so check road conditions if you're travelling in spring.

The weather can change quickly at this altitude. The viewpoint has proper facilities including parking and the viewing platform. It's not as crowded as some of Norway's more famous lookouts, which is actually quite nice. You can take your time here without fighting for photo spots. From Gaularfjellet you can continue towards Balestrand or head back the way you came.
