Gunnar Berg (1863-1893) was one of the first artists to paint the nature and fishing life of Lofoten, and is considered northern Norway's greatest painter of his era. Born on Svinøya in Svolvær, he left business studies in Bergen to attend the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and spent his brief career capturing the dramatic light and landscapes of his home islands. The gallery in Svolvær displays nearly 70 oil paintings and several pencil sketches, including his most famous work, The Battle of Trollfjorden, depicting a violent confrontation during the 1890 Lofoten fishery. He died at just 29, but his work remains central to the visual identity of Lofoten.
