Fossane gård

60 minutes
Fossane is a farm, where you can stay in traditional wooden houses over 100 years old, with grass roofs and original timber walls.

The farm was a dairy operation until 2000, when a voluntary buy-out ended milk production across much of rural Norway. The owners shifted to farm tourism, renting out the old buildings that had been in the family for generations. They also built their own small hydropower plant in 2001, so the electricity you use comes straight from the river. The water comes from their own well, the firewood from their own forest.

Fossane is a good base for hiking to the Ritland crater, Skomakarnibbå, or the mountain pasture at Subbeli. There is a lake nearby for canoeing, and the river Tøtlandsåna has natural pools for swimming. The farm has sheep, hens, cats and dogs wandering about.

It is run today by Janneke and Martijn, who are happy to show guests their hydropower station or share tips about hidden spots in the area. The farm is certified for ecotourism.
