Folldal Gruver: Mine Train into the Mountain

90 minutes
Folldal Mines opened in 1748, producing copper, zinc, and sulphur for almost 250 years until final closure in 1993. At its peak, the operation employed 550 people. What remains is one of Norway's foremost industrial heritage sites: about 70 preserved buildings, slag heaps, tips, and equipment spread across the old mining grounds. The mine tour goes by train, 600 metres into the mountain to a huge chamber called Wormshall, which doubles as a concert venue for up to 100 guests.

Folldal sits off the main Rv3 route, on the road between Alvdal and the Rondane Scenic Route. The detour is about 30 kilometres from Rv3. The site also includes a museum and the old Director's residence, which now operates as accommodation. The landscape around the mines, scarred and shaped by centuries of extraction, tells its own story.
