Fish Market (Fisketorget)

👥 Can be crowded
The fish market at Bergen harbour has been here since the 1200s. It used to be a working market where fishermen sold their catch directly from the boats. Those days are long gone.

Today it is a tourist attraction. The outdoor stalls and the indoor hall sell seafood, fruit, and souvenirs at prices that make locals wince. A simple fish and chips with a beer can easily cost 500 kroner or more. The vendors are friendly and the displays look impressive, but the food is nothing you cannot get better and cheaper at a regular restaurant in town.

Locals avoid the place. Some find it embarrassing, a market that exists entirely to extract money from visitors who do not know any better. That may sound harsh, but it is the honest assessment. If you want fresh seafood in Bergen, go to a normal fishmonger or a restaurant instead.

That said, the market is right on the harbour between Bryggen and the city centre, so you will probably walk past it anyway. It is fine to look around. Just do not expect an authentic experience, and check prices before you order anything.
