Drangedal sits in the village of Prestestranda, in a municipality whose history is tied to the timber trade. Logging and river floating shaped life here for centuries, and traces of that heritage survive in the preserved architecture and local customs.

The Drangedal Bygdetun is an open-air museum with 19 historic buildings, most donated by local families, offering a window into the traditional way of life in this part of Telemark. Drangedal Church dates from 1773. From here the Sørlandsbanen enters its long interior stretch through the forests between Telemark and the Agder coast.
