Berkåk: Where Dovrefjell Ends and Trøndelag Begins

60 minutes
The administrative centre of Rennebu municipality, Berkåk sits in the Orkla valley where the E6 descends from the Dovre plateau into gentler Trøndelag farmland. Just north at Ulsberg, Rv3 branches off toward Østerdalen and Røros. The town itself is a service stop: petrol stations, a grocery store, and a place to stretch your legs. The Orkla river running through the valley is one of Norway's best salmon rivers, though the good fishing stretches are mostly further downstream. Berkåk is unremarkable in the best sense: a functional crossroads where you decide whether to continue straight to Trondheim or Oslo, or turn west.
