Årdal (Ryfylke)

60 minutes
This is Årdal in Hjelmeland municipality, not to be confused with the more famous Årdal at the Sognefjord with its aluminium industry. This Årdal is a small agricultural village by the Årdalsfjord, known for its sand quarries. The sand from here was actually used to build the Øresund Bridge connecting Denmark and Sweden.

The main attraction is Årdal gamle kirke, the old church from 1619. It's one of the most distinctive Renaissance wooden churches in Norway. The congregation grew so much over the years that they literally sawed out one of the walls to extend the building, giving it an unusual three-part shape. Inside, the walls and ceiling are covered with painted decorations of prophets, angels and flowers. Parts of a medieval stave church that stood here earlier were reused in the construction.

The church is usually open during summer daytime hours. There's also a "Fairytale Forest" nearby with wooden troll and gnome figures, which is popular with families.
