Alvøen is one of Norway's oldest industrial communities. The Fasmer family ran a paper mill here and built a complete workers' village with school, savings bank, library, and community hall.

The manor house dates from 1797 and is now a museum with collections of period furniture, silver, and porcelain. The grounds include a formal garden from the 1930s and a Chinese-inspired pavilion. Part of Bymuseet i Bergen.
